Nova Docking Station Cleaning/Disinfection

Hi all! We are trying to figure out how best to implement the updated IFUs stating that the docking station must be cleaned and disinfected every 3 days. It's a bit disappointing that we can't send an automated message to the device every three days. We are floating around using MTE or sending messages every 3 days for a set period of time. If you're using the Nova StatStrip glucometers, how are you planning on implementing this change at your facility?

I missed that update. Can you forward me a copy of the notice?

Can you send me a copy as well?

I contacted our NOVA rep and she provided a more updated version.  I have attached.  It now states to clean docking station as needed basis to visual inspection.
Nova StatStrip Docking Station Cleaning Instruction - Updated with CIB02-26SS April 26.pdf
updated cleaning and disinfection gluc meter and dock stn April 2026.pdf

It's CIB 01-26SS, but this is the gist of it:

Cleaning and Disinfecting the Meter and Docking Station

The StatStrip Glucose Hospital Meter should be cleaned and disinfected after each patient use to minimize the risk of transmission of blood-borne pathogens between patients and healthcare professionals.

The StatStrip Hospital Meter Docking Station should be cleaned and disinfected every 3 days to minimize the risk of transmission of blood-borne pathogens between patients and healthcare professionals.

Healthcare professionals and others should follow Good Laboratory Practice guidelines and these important safety instructions.
Healthcare professionals should ensure they are wearing protective gloves when disinfecting the meter or docking station and should sanitize their hands following approved guidelines after handling the meter.

Thanks Deborah! Do you know if they're planning on sending out the correction to everyone?

Our system actually contacted Nova about this restrictive wording, and they will be updating the language to make it clear that it is a RECOMMENDATION to clean the dock every three days. They sent out clarifying communication on 4/16 to that effect.

Well this helps a bunch, Thank you Deborah

It is recommendation. Nova suggests that the StatStrip Hospital meter docking stations are cleaned and disinfected per current hospital policy for shared equipment surfaces, or on an as needed basis due to visual inspection.

We have a padlet that reviews the specific cleaning steps cited by Nova at each glucometer station.  We updated this with the additional cleaning instructions for the dock itself.  My system decided on Tues, Thrus & Saturday to be designated for them to be cleaned and for the staff to be trained to this.  I've updated our policy, pushed out the padlet to the different facilities to laminate and distribute it.

  • The update also includes wording stating that one cleaning product should be selected and used exclusively.

Also, there may be some disagreement on this here within the forum but I've always understood Manufacturer "recommendations" to be interpreted by Regulatory as "required".  I recommend caution to those who interpret this update as a "recommendation".

We are working with nursing to define a manageable process.  The suggestion is to add it to daily QC.  More often than needed, but easier to manage and for nurses to speak to.

I just received this info today from our Nova rep so not sure if/when the new update will be formally communicated to all customers.  This is what the rep stated: I just inquired and they REVISED some of this language in the CIB which may make it more reasonable to implement. The product manager also made a one-pager that goes with the CIB in case it’s needed for education purposes.     We are going to meet with our infection control team to see what our facility shared equipment surfaces policy states and if we will need to make any changes to our POCT policy.

Joint Commission surveys recommendations as required.  Not sure about others

Thank you, Deborah for sharing the updated bulletin! I was sweating trying to figure out how best to handle the Q3d cleaning/disinfection.

Also, since this has been mentioned a couple times in previous replies, just wanted to share that as of March 2026, Joint Commission is now inspecting only to manufacturer requirements, not recommendations, for waived testing. Obviously, if your written procedure is more stringent than the requirements, they'll hold you to your written procedure. Notification of this change can be found here: Joint Commission News - March 2026 | Joint Commission.

Wow, this is amazing news, thank you Leah!!! Good thing my policy is in draft at the moment...

I have not heard this news yet, but I also never get any communications from NOVA. Are you receiving this information from emails or a letter?  I looked at the notice that someone posted, and it is showing a dock for the new meter, we have the gen 2 meters.  I also checked online at NOVA IFU's and did not find it mentioning dock cleaning for either meter---guess those are not updated yet??.  We were also caught off guard when they implemented the 2-wipe cleaning and disinfecting procedure.
