Debate in house about Kit lot # vs strip or cartridge lot #
There is a debate among techs and unfortunately we now have to spell it out in policy since our current wording is vague. I would like to know how everyone else handles this:
What is acceptable to record under a patient result? the box lot number that the kit parts come in or the actual strip/cartridge lot number printed on the packaging? When we check in the kits we record the lot number on the box but some people take the packaging with them to the computer and record the lot number on the strip/cartridge when resulting which isn't always the same as what is printed on the box that all the components for testing come in.
We could 1. Cover all bases and record in our logs both the box # and packaging # so we can tie the number appropriately? OR 2.draw the line and only the box# is acceptable?

Always best to go with what you can control rather than what you can't. You'll likely never get the staff to comply with copying a box lot if what they have in front of them is a cartridge/strip lot#. Since you are receiving inventory, I'd copy all parent lot#(box) as well as child lot# (cartridge/strip) in your records so that you can tie them together in the event of a recall - which is the real point of associating lot numbers with results anyway.
