Cord blood gases

We use EPIC, sunquest and istats. Currently the RT performs the ABG using mom's CSN account. This downloads into sunquest and then the RT has to go back and manually add an order and results to sunquest for the infant. This is causing multiple clerical errors.
Do other facilities put cord blood results on both the mom and infant charts?
Does EPIC have a system to automatically link these or does sunquest?

Unless something has changed Abbott i-STATs are not approved for use with Cord Blood Gases, FYI.

Can you tell me if EPOC is approved for use with cord blood samples?
I don't believe so....from their procedure manual:
The epoc Blood Analysis System is intended for use by trained medical professionals as an in vitro diagnostic device for the quantitative testing of samples of heparinized or un-anticoagulated arterial, venous, or capillary whole blood in the laboratory or at the point of care.
Hope this helps,
Lois
epoc has the following choices for sample type:
arterial, venous, mixed-venous, capillary, cord, cord arterial, cord venous.
I stand corrected, Karen. Thanks. I finally found the list under test information page. Why wouldn't they put it up in the intended use or even sample section? lol. We don't use these in FBC....yet....so I'm glad you clarified!
Thanks,
Lois
I agree it would be nice if it was clearer. We use them for cord venous and cord arterial. If the blood is drawn by the Dr. and he doesn't specify, they just choose cord as the sample type.
I-STAT is approved for cord gas also.
Would you please send me the documentation you found proving this?
Thanks, Jeremy

Jeremy,
I-STAT is approved for whole blood; cord blood is whole blood and as such is included. Cord blood is also displayed as a choice when selecting sample type on the I-STAT.
Per I-STAT system Manual section 2, I-STAT Analyzer ART: 714364-00, and Customization ART: 714371-00F.
Mary
Mary-
When we contacted Abbott about this, they could not provide us with proof that the i-STAT 1 System had been validated using Cord Blood. Also, we cannot find Cord blood listed in the procedure manual.
Thanks, Jeremy

What about the electronics? How does it go to the EMR and whose chart is it posted to?
Does anyone put this on both mom and infant? If so how?
What about other cord blood testing such as genetic testing, group and rH?
