Do your outpatient sites perform Trichomonas testing? If yes do you use a kit and what kit?
Thanks,
Nancy

Sorry Nancy but no we don't. Those involved in ObGyn and very few Fam Med/Int Med MDs use PPMPs instead of POCT.
Peggy
We do not allow our clinic locations to perform PPMP or utilize Trich kits, however the hospital laboratory uses the OSOM Trichomonas test kit as a reflex test on all wet preps that did not identify trichomonas on microscopy.
As a side note: Since inception, we've only had one out of 630 samples positive by test kit that were negative by microscopy which indicates the competency skill set of the laboratory personnel. We are now considering discontinuance of the reflex testing.
Everyone will have a different patient population with high or low risks for infection. Determine your organizational risk. Is there a patient care need to have an immediate answer on trichomonas? If the incidence rate is low, then I would argue the expense associated with a high number of negative testing results would warrant careful consideration for allowing the testing at POC.
Good luck
