I would like to hear what other sites policies are on students and performing POC testing. This is something that I am challenged on every year.
Thank you!

We removed the access for students last year after I begged the pathologist to OK the removal. There was angst because we have our own nursing school. One of the nursing school deans told us "You can't do that!"
We removed them for the reasons below:
My advice...gt the CLIA holder on your side....and that is that. Their word on the matter is the last word. Let me know if you need any further information.

Thank you Deanna! That is a ton of great information. Do you do the same for any provider offices? This seems to be where I have the biggest issue. I have 15 offices, each with a different person listed on the CLIA certificate.
I assign a number to the nursing instructors. The students will use the instructors # for testing, it is the instructors that are responsible for the education and training of the nursing students.
No separate clinics that ave students.
Our ambulatory practices are handled (foe students) same as inpatient or ED. The way our learning system works, no one is automatically loaded for POCT based on survey questions for new hires. The manager for each unit or practice must enroll operators. That keeps out students unless the manager is taking responsibility. But back up Deanna-manager must get permission from practice CLIA holder.

Hmm...."My advice...gt the CLIA holder on your side....and that is that. Their word on the matter is the last word."
thought I said that eariler......
My words"but back up Deanna" was meant as " I back up what Deanna posted" and I was not suggesting she was incorrect. I believe my message was taken a different way, I apologize.

We do much the same as Kathleen except the number corresponds to the school. They use it rarely so I'm presume the number used is the nurse taking care of the patient who would be ultimately responsible for the result.
I /we are in Deanna's camp. No Students. We too have a nursing school.
Thank you everyone. Do any of you have provider offices performing POC testing that have students? I am looking at MA students in provider offices and performing POC testing.
We do not allow students perform testing except during training and under the instructors code. All our instructors perform annual competencies just like the staff.
Yes, Cindy. I will email you privately.
