QC Frequency for HemoCue Glucose 201 and Hb 201+

Does anyone have a reference for the recommended QC frequency for either of these tests? We don’t run them often, so we are testing external controls each day of use, or at least once per week. The package insert and operator just directs
users to “follow local procedures”. The director said that our lab consultant asked for a reference as to why we do this, but I can’t find anything concrete.

Hi Tara,
We are preparing to begin using the hemocue glucose for our critically ill patients. We are requiring our users to perform controls every 12 hours, only on days that testing is performed. We use the same frequency for our other glucose meters as well. (Accucheck Inform II).
Hope this helps,
Aggie
I couldn't find a regulatory reason, but we require QC run every 24 hrs on the HemoCue Hb 201. Other than "good laboratory practice", the ED felt it would better to have the staff run the controls at the same time as they do the glucose meter controls. Since the microcuvette vial is supposed to be kept closed, this is a good way to monitor cuvette exposure. Ultimately it comes down to the Lab Director's discretion.
I can't speak for CAP, but Joint Commission used to require daily QC on any instrument-based waived testing (WT 04.01.01). This was changed in 2012 to require QC per manufacturer's instructions (bulletin attached). However, we didn't change our practice for the waived testing already in use since it's good for one element of competency. Hemocue Hb still gets QC'd every 24 hours of patient testing. We implemented clinitest hCG on the Clinitek Status since the change and went with QC on each box.

How many levels of Hgb controls are you running on the Hemocue HB201+, two or three? If two, which two?
We run 2 levels here: levels 1 and 3.
We also run two levels: 1 and 3.
