New TJC Blood Gas Requirement

We have heard that Joint Commission has changed their QC requirements for blood gas testing. Currently we are CAP, not TJC, but CAP is likely to follow their lead in the near future.  Has anyone heard of this new requirement which eliminates Electronic QC for blood gas testing? QSA.06.02.01 EP.1-2

Do you actually have the standard...or is this just "heard through the grapevine?'

For those of us without access to TJC lab standards can you post it along with the EP if you do have it? I am curious....thanks.

Can IQCP be used to determine frequency of liquid QC?  Without an IQCP the default would be the CLIA regulation of daily/8 hr liquid QC?

That would be my understanding, yes.

Attachment. 201708151124.pdf On the chart that was sent as a Jpeg.... Where did that information come from? I am attaching the exact Joint Commission standard and no where in that standard are the items in column three listed.

The current version of the Standard and Elements of Performance were recently update with an effective date of 7/1/17. I only saw one change to EP #1.

They currently read:
QSA.06.02.01 The laboratory verifies the operation of each blood gas testing instrument through the use of quality control materials.

• EP #1: The laboratory tests at least two (used to be three) levels of quality control materials for blood gas testing each day the procedure is performed. The combination of controls and calibrators used each day of testing are rotated to check normal, alkalosis, and acidosis levels. The quality control results are documented. (See CLIA 493.1267(b,c,d)

• Ep #2: The laboratory tests at least one level of quality control material for each eight hours of patient blood gas testing. The quality control results are documented. (See CLIA 493.1267(b,c,d) (No change to this EP)

• EP #3: The laboratory tests at least one level of quality control material each time patients are tested unless automated instrumentation verifies calibration internally every 30 minutes. (See CLIA 493.1267(b,c,d) (No change to this EP)
In reviewing the JC website, I have not seen any other pre-publication changes related to blood gas testing.

Hope this is helpful.
