pH testing

I am curious how labs perform pH testing on fluids. We currently use pH paper in the laboratory and Respiratory therapy uses the I-STAT (CG4 cartridge) for blood gas testing under the guidance of the POC department. We have been challenged with possibly having respiratory therapy do the pH testing at the bedside or having Med Techs perform the testing on an I-STAT that would live in the lab. This could only be done if validation studies were performed since this is not an approved sample type on the i-STAT. Your input is appreciated. liz

Hi Elizabeth,
we only perform pH on ocular and we use ph Strips and its performed in ER.
Joseph Rudic
Blood gas pH is performed on the ISTAT. We utilize pH paper for ocular pH testing. For gastric pH we use pH strips (our strips have 3 pads) for point of care testing. The main lab utilizes a gastroccult card for any gastric pHs that come there. The pH paper and pH strips are both classified as waived.
We use pH paper in POC for gastric pH, vaginal pH (for assessment of potential infection), vaginal pH (for assessment of ruptured membranes), and ocular pH. Blood gases are done on Radiometers by respiratory therapy in the hospital. We have the CG8+ i-STAT cartridge in POC for blood gas testing in the OR.
Which company do you use for your ocular strips and do you have established cutoff ranges for ocular PH
Hydrion from Micro Essential Laboratory. Our normal range for eyes is 6.5-7.6.
Hi Elizabeth,
I have experience setting up a large hospital system with performing iSTAT pH body fluids...off label/high complexity of course. I would be happy to help you with setting this up. Send me an email at mary.hammel@uchealth.org and we can talk about your system and some options you might have!
Best,
Mary
