Occult Blood Testing

Hello All!
I'm sure I'm overthinking this but... the question has come up regarding the use of a stool sample collected from a rectal exam. I know "it's always been done that way" but.... The package insert says "in vitro use only" and directions point to a voided specimen that can be sampled from two different sites. There is no reference to samples collected by exam. Does anyone have insight on this?

No, you're not overthinking it - though it only recently came to light at our facility as well. To follow the product recommendations to the letter, means that most occult blood methods (e.g., Hemoccult SENSA), are voided specimen only - though, as you said, it has been done forever by the sample collected during digital exam. Add to that the fact that it is mostly physician-performed and it's really a losing battle, lol.
We discovered only recently that the only kit that lists that it's approved for a sample collected during digital exam is the Aerscher HemaPrompt. Fortunately, that is the method we were headed towards changing to anyway.
This is one of the main reason we moved to Hemaprompt. No bottles of developer was an added bonus!!
