Adding Chemistry testing to a Cancer Center
One of the clinics I manage is a cancer center with two Hem/Onc Physicians. They have a Sysmex three-part diff CBC analyzer and now they would like to add a chemistry analyzer. They are considering a Piccolo but are open to other analyzers. They want something that will perform liver enzymes as well as a basic metabolic panel. They do not have an MT in their clinic; a Phlebotomist will be running both analyzers. They have very limited space since the lab is very small. We are scheduled to speak to the Alfa Wassermann rep tomorrow regarding their chemistry analyzer. Does anyone know of a better fit for this lab? The hospital is just next door to it but they want to improve the turnaround time to better serve their chemo patients.

I would use Piccolo - waived liver and comp cartridges.
I love my Piccolos and strongly recommend them. I work in a cancer center and did many correlations against the Vitros at our main lab.
Hi Mary, you're the first person who has had positive things to say about Piccolo. We are about to implement Piccolo at a free-standing hybrid ED/UC (mostly because they want to do liver panels). Initially we will open 2 sites in 2019, then 4 more in the next year. I'd love to be able to pick your brain with issues that arise! My email is kathleen.david@tricore.org
The Piccolo is very easy to use and the bonus of waived testing for Liver and BMP is great. Also, the Piccolo negates the need for a centrifuge. Each test cartridge takes about 12 minutes. That could mean almost a half an hour for both the Liver and BMP. The office would need a freezer for controls and a refrigerator for the boxes of cartridges. The cartridge boxes are quite large.
If your phlebotomist can use her cell phone, she can totally do this.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! Sounds like they're leaning in the right direction with the Piccolo. Any additional thoughts are appreciated!
Would you please be wiling to share your Piccolo SOP ?
We are going to purchase this for a Brand new free standing ED to be ran by RNs and Ed techs for liver panel.
I am curious how hemolyzed or lipemic samples score with Piccolo? Does it flag them?
Thanks.
