Does anyone have any experience using the Siemens Clinitek Status +; are there any downsides or restrictive limitations?

There is one downside if you are in a desert area like Albuquerque. Clinitek requires a humidity of at least 18%. This is problematic in very dry areas, and we've had many problems maintaining that 18%, including having to get humidifiers. However, if you're in a less dry area, that wouldn't apply.

Hi,

Are you CAP or TJC inspected for waived testing? One of my hospitals is TJC inspected for lab and was cited because they did not double check manual result entry into the EHR.  So they have to double check manual results daily. If you analyzers are interfaced, that is not an issue.

Hi Reine,

Thanks for your reply!  That is something to think about although I might have to disagree with the inspector.  We are JC, but according to the SAG charts in the back of the standards book, that only applies to non-waived testing.  We do perform this action as best practice though but things still slip through the cracks.

Hi,

Yes, she cited for waived testing in our clinic.  We also instituted the double check in our primary care clinics when they started running Alere I Strep and Flu testing, even though they are not CAP or TJC.  There were protests (they said it sounded like busy work), but they did the check anyway and guess what, found many errors and many not reported at all.  Since our charges drop when the results are entered, needless to say, there were many missing charges.

As Reine stated, it is a nice way to verify that the work was done and that all the proper information is inputted into the LIS. We were cited for this also, and found that it was a way to confirm that there were no mistakes made.

I'll chime in for CAP here too - waived or non-waived, they also have a requirement that all manually-entered laboratory results are double-checked.  We have used that rationale to push for getting an interface in both POC and non-POC settings.  Time is money!

Debra Stark - How do you manage the operators in your instruments?  We have Telcor and are looking to interface but heard the operators would not flow to the analyzers and we would still need to put them in each instrument.

Telcor will accept users as long as the users are defined on the Clinitek Plus analyzers and in Telcor.  The analyzer also has to be set to mandatory user log in before using analyzer.

We utilize Telcor and have our Cliniteks set up with the Clinitek Connect. I supplied the operator list to Telcor who entered it into QML and it downloaded into our Cliniteks. Keep in mind that you do need to utilize the Clinitek Plus. The predecessor to the Clinitek Plus will only store something like 20 operator names.

We have Telcor as middleware.

We can assign what instrument  the operator  can have access as soon as their Competency is approved.

If the operator is already in the database, we just turn on which instrument they can access.

You do not want blanket access to all the instruments.

You can  also assign 6 month access only if the operator is newly hired,

so they have to recertify every 6 months the first year after their initial training for non-waived tests.

Just to be clear, if you use Telcor QML to certify operators for Clinitek STATUS devices, you do not need to also enter them at the analyzer(s).  That is the whole point - it will send a list of certified operators.  Remember, you must use the certification function in Telcor - simply entering them as operators in Telcor does not send their information to the device.  But once certified, the operator will be included in the list that it sent to the appropriate Clinitek device, every 10 minutes.

Does anyone have Clinitek STATUS and use RALS?  If so... Can you use the operator lockout function and will RALS push the operator list to the machine?

James Beck,

You say that Telcor can send operator information to the Clinitek.  Do you use RapidComm?

Hi Shea,

We just started our project with Cliniteks connected to RALS . There is QC and operator lock out. Also the operator list will be  pushed to the machine.  We are locking our machines to be scan only except for employee ID number.

The amount of operators per location is a limitation due to the Clinitek and not RALS is it only holds 700 names.  We made separate Clinitek locations within RALS on each campus to overcome this obstacle.

We also are a Epic/Beaker hospital and our first official live patient went through last week and looks fantastic in Chart Review.

I am so excited to get them out there (25) and get rid of paper QC charts forever!!!!!

I am waiting to hear a project date to start this here! We have about the same number of Cliniteks and also use EPIC/Beaker.
