Patient Care Techs performing blood glucose monitoring

Wondering how many hospitals allow Patient Care Techs to perform POCT glucose? The pros and cons that your facility has experienced. Has there been an increase in the quality check errors, the amount of discrepancy results, scanning the wrong patient armband, or the number of critical low results? Do the nurses accept the glucose results that the Patient Care Tech gets or do they perform the POCT glucose again?

We have pct’s run them and they are fine at running them. If there are criticals the nurse must look them up in the patient’s chart or directly from the meter. They can not receive a verbal. We have positive patient id so the name from the scanned arm band is attached to the results. We also require that they scan the arm band on the patient’s arm vs labels laying around.

Is this the same as a MA, CNA or a Paramedic or EMT? If so, yes absolutely. The CNA's are the super users for the glucometers since that is a primary task for them. They report results to the RN.

WE have CNAs, Patient Care Techs, ER techs do our blood glucose testing.
Most of them are better than the nurses in doing them.
If they were trained properly, they should be able to do them competently and proficiently.
Be sure to watch them closely at the start of their employment after they were trained.
Correct their mistakes immediately.
Suspend their access if they make mistakes in patient Identification or too many flow errors.
( you have to monitor these anyway)
Do not be afraid to require retraining if needed.
Explain the what, where, why and how of the POC glucose testing.
Don’t just do a “ monkey see and monkey do” training.
In our facilities they attend orientation with hands- on training.
They watch a video and take exams before they are allowed to test.
They must show competency during our skills fair, doing hands- on performance of QC and fake blood.
All that is required for waived testing is a high school diploma.
Are the PCTs performing under the lab CLIA or does nursing have their own CLIA?
