Proficiency Testing Requirements

Is anyone familiar with Oxicom made by Waters Medical? I am trying to get all of the supplies the Cath lab needs to perform QC and maintain compliance. PT testing material is not available from CAP. A customer service rep from API told me that she didn't think those analyzers require PT since they are sent in every six months for calibrations. Does anyone know if this is correct?

API is incorrect. They do need PT but when we had them we did alternate PT.

A comparison with blood gas analyzer is what I did. 5 every 6 months, meets comparison and proficiency requirements.

Related question- what does everyone do for O2Sat for PT/alternative assessment? It states on CAP activity menu that O2Sat requires alternative assessment as no PT is available. Does anyone know if an alternative assessment is required if the O2 sat is calculated.
Thanks,
Brian
Since they required a quarterly comparison to the blood gas analyzers, we treated that as the alternate PT and sent up blind specimens for them to run that we had already run in the lab.
Doesn’t the SO survey meet the requirements for PT Testing? We used it for years.
Since the main lab does the PT testing (SO) for measured hgb and hgO2, we do AMR and correlation using RNA linearity product.

Yes it is. I called CAP on this and was told that if you do a survey that covers the measured analytes used in the calculation then you are covered for the O2Sat, you just need to state that. The requirement is intended for areas like Cath Lab that only
report O2Sat and nothing else.

I am planning to do a comparison with our Radiometer so we will have that. Deanna, just out of curiosity, what did you do for your alternative PT assessment?
Below is the old procedure from the Oxicom. We had an AVOX/GEM that was the reference method at the time. We have not had OxiCom for 5 years now. They were breaking frequently and we were concerned that the parts would eventually not be available. This passes CAP during the time we had the Oxicom.
Thank you Deanna! That's very helpful.
We do comparison every with a blood gas analyzer as well every 6 months. Do you send your instrument for calibration or do you just do it on your own in your facility?
CardinalHealth just sent out a webinar today for PT.
