Clinitek Status Connect & Telcor

We just recently purchased the Connect bases for our Clinitek Status + analyzers. For those of you using the Connect system, do you use a barcode for your patient? If so, what information is obtained from the barcode by the Clinitek?  We currently have the Meditech Ambulatory system, and were told that they do not have the capability to produce barcodes for patients. We also use Telcor QML for our glucose meters and would like to expand it to our Cliniteks, but don't know how we would do that without the ability to generate barcodes for patients.


Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,


I have Telcor, and our LIS is Softlab.  We use barcodes generated from  the HIS.  We have the clinitek set up to read the account number, and the results pass thru Telcor, and then to the LIS, into the HIS.  The Clinitek thru Telcor can now get the time change, and update the operator status, ie renewal certification.  The connect allows you to control the daily QC lock out on both the dipstick and HCG testing.

We use Telcor QML, SOFT (LIS), and Epic (EHR) for our Clinitek Status+ analyzers through a wired connection. With the most recent software update, QML is able to adjust for daylight savings, receive QC and patient results, as well as error codes. Based on the device tip sheet we have, the wired or wireless connection is the only requirement for the Connect to communicate to QML. 


The OB groups have requested that we change the setting to barcode entry only for patient ID, but all remaining units have the option of manually typing in the patient ID or scanning it. Obviously, you can deduce the advantages of using the OB method of disallowing manual entry of patient ID. 


As long as there's a patient ID of some sort and you work with the Telcor team, you should be able to connect the Clinitek to QML as well. If you're able to connect the glucometers, I can't think of a reason why the same wouldn't apply to the Cliniteks.

We are currently placing our interfaced Clinitek Status with connect base out in the clinics. We are RALS> Epic Beaker> Epic. They are hard wired in a data jack.  Our IT guy mapped us a sticky label with the CSN (account number ) in a barcode for the cup. Our entire process is SCAN only . The only place they could enter a number is their employee ID but we also give them barcodes for their badges.  We have both operator and QC lock out. The QC needs to pass before they can use the machine.  That is awesome for regulatory!!


So far we have 10 out of 25 working  and it is going fairly smooth.. One obstacle we noticed has been when the patient has been discharged for their visit before the urine test crosses over to Epic. It then gets stuck in RALs and we need to push it through.  We need to train our providers not to close their encounter  to quickly .


The staff really love it after they get used to it. It eliminates paper QC log sheets we have been keeping and retrieving. We can review and sign off on QC right on RALS. That is a beautiful thing for POCT staff!!!

We use Telcor>Cerner. There was not a way to put bar codes on our sticky labels. Nursing informatics got involved. Now when a UA order is generated for POC, a nursing sheet is created with not only the MRN but also the patient's name so now both identifiers are scanned into the Clinitek. We use the same sheet for the print out if the sample needs to be sent to the lab for follow up testing/microscopic.


I do not know if RALS has this capability, but in Telcor we can configure a device to accept either pre-admits or discharges. We allow 1 hour either way for our ED and Transport team since testing can occur either side depending on how critical the case is or the amount of transport time to get to the ED.

Thanks Deb for the tip from Telcor. I will check with RALS to see if that is possible for discharges. It can be a pain when it is hung up and we are not always at the computer.


 


 


We have the Clinitek Connects with Telcor middleware and Meditech LIS/HIS.


We use the Account number  from the Patient Barcode label to input into Clinitek.


The nurses/EMT/ Clinical personnel may enter the Account number manually and


as soon as the test is completed, the Clinitek sends result to LIS/HIS/EMR, bills and charge the patient account.


As long as the Clinitek is connected to Meditech, the results should be sent to EMR and charged.


Telcor helped us connected our Cliniteks. Call them us, they are very resourceful and helpful.


We have glucose meters, i-STATs and Cliniteks connected through Telcor to Meditech.

Do you have ADT feed to Telcor for outpatients and if so do you know how this was set up?

As long as the patient is admitted and registered in Meditech, we have ADT feed to Telcor.


They are sorted as Outpatient or inpatient.  It was set up by Telcor depending on the criteria set up.


Patients are in the system 7 days after they are discharged so later  charges are captured.


It is a feature Telcor sets up.   


They will keep records on how long you want them


 kept in the system depending on how many tests you do/  day.  


They can bog down the system if you try to keep them too long if you have lots of tests.

Do you use the Acute system or the Ambulatory system for Meditech? We have the Acute system for the hospital, but our provider offices use the Ambulatory system. We were told the Ambulatory system does not have the ability to generate a patient barcode.  The lack of this is what is holding us up from interfacing of results.


 


Did they say why they cannot generate barcode? 


I was told by a programmer that everything is possible.


Does Meditech want you to pay for that extra?


We use a bi-directional orders interface from Epic to Telcor.  A barcode prints that contains the order number but if I remember right Telcor could have used both MRN or Account number along with matching criteria.  That's a bummer about not being able to get a barcode.  I think that would be a showstopper for us.  We bought wireless adapters but never got them to work so we had to go back and get network cables pulled.

When I spoke to our IT department, they said that Meditech told them that a barcode of the patient was not available at this time. I'm sure it is possible somehow, but we just have to wait.
