Competency assessment

We are CAP inspected and POC is under the main lab CLIA #. I have 3 moderately complex testing platforms within POC. I have clinical nurse educators and respiratory educators that help with competency. We require them to have a 4 year science degree + 2 years experience to do this since that is the requirement for moderately complex testing.

My question is, I have an MLT in the lab who helps with POC. Since we are under the umbrella of the main lab CLIA which is a highly complex lab and she has the qualifications to assess competency for highly complex testing, can she do competency observation for iSTAT, which is moderately complex?

It is very confusing and frustrating, and doesn't make sense (actually heard a CAP person say this, although not for the record!). What might be promising is that I heard the CLIAC was meeting in April, and one of the things they were to discuss was personnel requirements. I haven't heard any of the proceedings from the meeting, but that is a possible positive sign--maybe? CLIA really needs to come into the 21st century!

Only if they have a Bachelor's degree, in a physical, chemical or biological science.  You would also have to document the science credits using their transcript

Joann- it was a BS in Health Science or Health Science Education

Yes, as long as they have a bachelors degree.

CLIA needs to drop the degree requirement and go by so many credits (6) in biology, so many credits (6) in Chemistry, so many microbiology credits (like AMT and ASCP to challenge the boards).  Or have acceptable tracks (1) MLS degree (2) Bachelor's degree in a physical, chemical or biological degree. (3) BS/BA degree with X # credits in Biology must include microbiology, and X # credits in chemistry must include organic chemistry, and X # credits in math must include ????.

Just my thoughts

CLIA needs to create a new category for POC testing competency check-off requirements and stop trying to lump it in with the lab.

This refers to “testing personnel”, not those who assess competency.

For CAP, those who assess competency must meet the qualifications for a Technical Consultant.

At our institution none of our respiratory therapists meet the requirements.  I reviewed all of their transcripts.  They do not even come close.

Even our nurses with BSNs did not meet it, the most credits they had in biology, chemistry or a physical science were 22.  They did not meet the 24 credit requirement.
I did find a few nurses who in addition to their BSN they also had other degrees in a science, so they met the requirement.
