Aloha all,
Does anyone use a glucometer in the OR along with other devices that already run glucose such as the I-stat or epoc?
Mahalo,
Shana

Aloha Shana,
No, we don't assign a connected glucose meter to any of the ORs. Good question!
Hi Shana,
We have 4 glucometers so far in the OR with CRNAs and anesthesia techs trained to use them. They no longer have access to EPOCS. Long story... Short version = after 5 months they gave them back to me. Couldn't handle the QC. Long version we would need drinks. So technically, no, we don't use them in OR along with other devices.

We have both connected glucose meters (6 meters in the inpatients and 5 in the outpatient areas) and 4 epocs in the OR. We have a wonderful group of RNs and their educators in Surgery to work with.
Shana,
We do not have glucose meters in the OR. If they want a glucose they use the ISTAT.
We caught them using the meter for a hip fluid....so no more meter.

...hip fluid to dose the glucose meter strip...you THINK you've heard it all after 20+ years in POCT...apparently I do not work with some of the major creative end users out there!
I kind of admired the MD I came across years ago being so forthright that he 'found a second way to use the rapid strep kits' in dermatology. I didn't admire that he had proceeded with his strategy before inquiring if it was 'ok' (too bad for him that I knew #1 derm was not a testing site for rapid strep ...where did he get the kit?...and #2 if a wound is your specimen source, you are off-label in using a rapid strep kit Mr. Physician).
How about urine strips in the OR to check for WBCs and bacteria in wounds
Unfortunately, I think the understood rule is if you're not there to tell them they can't - they will!!
