Glucose testing in neonates

Hello,

We are having issues with some neonates with glucometer (NOVA) readings as low as 25. It has happened on 3 babies in the last month. Other babies have tested within normal range. I did calibration verification on the 3 meters in the unit
and all were functioning properly. There is a written policy on how to collect the sample but I’m not sure that everyone is following it. They insist that they are. Has anyone had an experience like this and would you mind sharing what you did to resolve this
issue. I am meeting with the pediatric service tomorrow morning.

Thank you in advance for your help.

We found the biggest thing was uniformly warming the foot with a heel warmer not a wash cloth or anything else. Also nova actually sent us a rep to monitor how the nurses were drawing and made suggestions.

Sent via Groupsite Mobile.

Roche also came in and observed our nurses. The universal use of heel warmer was noted and the type of lancet they were using had changed. They changed back to the Tenderfoot lancet, used the heel warmers and correlations improved. We still have an outlier on occasion that we chalk up to high Hgb or screaming baby.
