Skills Demonstration for Non-Waived Competency Assessment

For those of you that use a "skills demonstration" instead of a direct observation for non-waived competency, what is included in the demonstration? How is it setup for you?
Thanks for your input.

We do a skills demo for the direct obs portion of PPMP competency. Usually we gather a small group of providers around the microscope in each clinic/floor and we go over a mock test following procedure and asking questions along the way. Anyone in the group is free to answer and we repeat the answer for everyone to hear.
Every year we try to ask questions about:
Sample type
Sample prep
What should be rejected
What findings can be reported
POC here has a few booths at the nursing competency fair and we use that time to do the majority of our competency assessments with help from the clinical educators. The only non-waived device I bring there is iSTAT. We still do the competency for AVOX and ACT in the units as it's really difficult to mock up a true skills demonstration for those.
We use old QC as fake patient samples and have operators run 1 "patient". They are required to demonstrate proper specimen and cartridge handling and filling, specimen type ID, critical result entry and cartridge removal and result upload. So essentially the same exact steps as a direct observation in a unit. We might focus on slightly different skills each year, depending on what folks have been struggling with. Prior to coming to the comp fair, they are required to complete the online e-learn power point and quiz.
Hi Steven,
If your physicians in OB/GYN are credentialed to perform microscopy, such as Fern tests, is the Hospital Lab POC department also responsible for their annual proficiency? We are a Joint Commission accredited lab.
Yes we are responsible for competency and proficiency. We order CAP PT which are just pictures of positive and negative Fern tests.
We are TJC accredited also.

"*Due to the significant challenges associated with performing direct observation of patient testing for either a large number of point-of-care testing personnel or for testing performed in a surgical area, the use of a skills demonstration is an acceptable option in these cases."
