Nova StatStrip Glucose Critical Result Procedure

My facility will be switching to the Nova StatStrip Glucometer's from the AccuChek Inform II's in a few months. Those that use the Nova's, what is your procedure for Critical Values? We currently have a lengthy process we're looking to change since the Nova's are approved for critically ill patient's. Do you just need to repeat and notify an RN/Dr, or is there a lab draw involved? Thank you!

We use Nova meters and we do not require that they repeat on the meter or the lab unless they find the results to be questionable. Otherwise they should act on that result right away, and document that they notified the RN or Provider in Epic.
For those of you using the Nova STAT strip glucometer, what sample type are you using for Critical Patients? Did they get clearance for capillary samples? If not, is it feasible to collect non-capillary samples on a frequent basis?
Is the Critical issue the reason for switching from the Accu-Chek Inform II system?
Nova is waived for all specimen types including capillary
Our procedure states:
Critical high or low result:
•It is recommended that critical glucose values be confirmed by repeating the test with a new strip (do not change meters). An exception to this repeat testing may be made if a high critical value obtained is consistent with previous glucose results.
•Results that do not match the clinical presentation of the patient should be confirmed by the main lab or blood gas analyzer.
•Critical low results should be confirmed by repeating the test with a new strip (do not change meters) to eliminate sample error as the cause of falsely low value.
Results outside the reportable range (10-600 mg/dL):
•Must be confirmed by repeating with a new strip. If no numeric result is obtained after repeat testing, order a STAT glucose from the main lab. If a blood gas is ordered, it can be done by RT on the blood gas analyzer.
◦Symptomatic patients may be treated appropriately without delay
Thank you for all your responses! You have been very helpful!
