Fern Testing

Hello All,
I have a question for those that have L&D departments that utilize Fern testing. Do any of you have departments that exclusively use this test to confirm PROM or do most of your departments utilize this test in conjunction with another test ( i.e AmnioTest or Nitrazine paper) for confirmation? I'm asking because we have a department that only wants to utilize the Fern test for PROM confirmations.

Our physicians use both the Fern test and Nitrazine
Same as Cathy.
We use to have Both the fern and Nitra test, but due to lack of cooperation from the Physicians in doing their competencies we took both away and just use amni-sure, and they have not complained about this and are actually relieved because now they do not have to do competencies, especially when they realized we were being cited by NYS and JCHO.

We use both. Physicians perform the fern test and the nurses do the nitrazine since it’s waived.

We do nitrazine, fern and ROM+(by clinical innovations) testing in our OBED. The information I have gathered is that you should not use one method to confirm rupture of membranes. If the patient is grossly ruptured using nitrazine or fern is acceptable. Otherwise we instruct our physicians that two of three methods should agree to determine PROM. The OBED RN's are trained to do all three tests.
