Where to purchase single Abbott istat cartridges

Hi,

I know this is a strange question, but I'm asking if anyone knows where I could get single or small numbers of istat cartridges.

I run a small non-profit event medical group and one event that we cover is a summer marathon which many of you may know puts runners at risk for hyponatremia.

We have an Istat to test for this, but can't afford to buy a box of cartridges at a time, since we'd probably only use 3-4.

So, there it is? Anyone have a lead? Thanks!

Do you work in conjunction with first responders, medics or ambulances?

Was wondering if you had local contacts such as that or ED locals then ask around who uses istat, see what could be arranged... I guess you don’t have to run two levels of QC?

In calculated reagents and controls.

None of the EMS groups in my area use istats. The local ED does not use them either.

As for QC, I'd have to start as this istat is new to us, and has not been put into use, so still learning.

Barring being able to purchase single cartridges, can anyone give me a ballpark shelf life/expiration date of refrigerated cartridges? Say, if I buy a box of 25 this year, will they they be good for use into the next calendar year, so I can spread the cost over two years?

Abbott will only guarantee a minimum of a 2 month expiration date.  If you only order one box I am pretty sure they will expire in about 2 months.  If you order a larger amount they are more willing to send a longer expiration date...I have been getting a 5 to 7 month expiration date with orders of 5 to 10 boxes.

Try contacting Abbott and ask if they would donate a box of cartridges. A few of our nurses went on a medical mission trip to Haiti last year and they approached us about taking an i-STAT. We could not let them use one of ours, but we did contact our i-STAT rep to see if he could help. He sent them a request form to be filled out by the mission sponsors. Abbott sent a loaner i-STAT and box of CHEM 8 cartridges for their trip. It was a really nice gesture from Abbott!
