I am looking for some info from anyone currently using a waived molecular strep A test.
What test are you using? Do you like it?
Pros and cons?
What is the approximate cost per test?
How long does it take for the strep test?
How much room does it take for the instrument?
Thanks!! anything you have to offer will be appreciated!

We just implemented the Abbott ID Now in 6 of our clinics. Eventually, it will be in all of them. So far, everyone loves them.
The cost is around $20/test, the run time is 6 minutes or less, and it is about the size of a toaster.
I like it because it is interfaced through RALS and I can track things a little bit better.
One thing that I didn't account for is that very busy clinics will need two (or more) instruments, because it can only run one test at a time. Our Urgent Cares run Flu A/B on them too. The Flu A/B takes 13 min to run, so that contributed to their bottle neck. If you're not going to run Flu, you may not see that problem.
Hi Tracy,
Great questions. At this time the 3 main options you have for waived Strep A are:
ID Now (Abbott)
LIAT (ROCHE)
Xpert "Express" (Cepheid)
The pros and cons are typically (time to result, steps involved, specimen collection and space). Each manufacturer varies in these areas, depending on the needs of your clinic any one of the manufacturers can be an excellent fit.
Time to result - Will range from 6 minutes to 20 minutes depending on (negative or positive result) and the manufacturer and the molecular technology being used.
Cost - This will vary from health system to health system, the national GPO being accessed and the anticipated volume of Strep A tests.
Space - All have a fairly small footprint, depending on volume you may need to have multiple units on a counter. The Cepheid allows for multiple "bays" within their platform so additional counter space is not needed, however their size is slightly larger than the others.
If you have any additional questions please feel free to email or call.
Jeff
We are in the process of installing Abbott ID Now for flu, strep, and RSV. If you are CAP, make sure to check the new standards. Even if it’s waived there are extra requirements for molecular.
