Are you using the Cepheid GeneXpert Xpress for COVID-19? Can you please share your pros and cons? We use the Abbott IDNOW for molecular strep and flu but may not be able to get the COVID kits. They’re manufacturing is unable to meet the high demand. I’m looking at the GeneXpress for COVID. Are you able to get kits for COVID?
Thank You,

Has anyone started using the GeneXpert for Covid 19 in their POCT areas? I was asked to set up one in one of our locations that is a couple of hours away from the hospital to make it easier for the kids to be tested before coming to the hospital for surgeries. I didn't know if anyone had started using it in POCT and if you have any tips or issues that you have run into?
Thanks
Adonica
Adonica,
we use the Cepheid in micro only. We do not want to use this kit for POCT due to the need of the safety cabinet/hood. We are experiencing the same restrictions on supply, we do get shipments based on an agreement and we do have this test in all of our micro/core labs at each hospital to help with Stat/Urgent testing needs.

Adonica - our clinics have been using the GeneXperts since last fall with great success. These clinics do not fall under my oversight but I was very involved in the evaluation and install process. They currently use them for Strep, Flu and RSV. They are run by medical assistants and they really like them and have few issues. The one issue we have is more internal - our IT department would not give Cepheid access to remote troubleshoot so that's been a problem.
At our hospital campuses we don't use them POC -they are located in the main labs. We just recently went live with the Covid testing in one lab only. Our Molecular Technical Specialist is impressed for far with the assay in regards to the low number of cartridge errors and invalids. Overall, it's a great test like their others. We are only performing the Covid testing at the hospitals - not at the clinics at all. That is due to supply shortages and limited testing guidance. It may be very difficult for you to obtain kits.
Hello,
Is anyone using the Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test by Mesa Biotech? Apparently it's one of the 3 tests allowed for waived testing, but I haven't heard of anyone actually using it.
Thanks!
Danielle
Quidel has an antigen test that can be used at POC. It just received FDA's approval for emergency use.
