New employee training via video?

Wondering if anyone is using videos or voice over PPTs to train new operators instead of a one on one with you or an educator? I'm thinking maybe for waived testing? Do they watch the video and then just demonstrate to someone? Our educators are stretched really thin right now due to staffing issues and I can tell that the training is getting rushed. Wondering if this is something we move towards for certain platforms.

I am wondering this same thing!  At this time, we don't do anything like this, but I've been wondering what alternatives there might be to in-person training sessions for the very reasons you stated.  We are getting an influx of agency hires who basically need 'on the fly' training, and it could get a little crazy. At the same time, I don't want to cut corners or sacrifice the quality of the training anyone receives. I'll be curious to know what others have to say.

We have training split into 2 parts:

1a.  Most staff go through an in-person 'new clinical employee orientation' full day class where one of the nursing educators goes over just about everything.  There's a short high-level presentation on glucose meters and lab specimen collection, quality, and labeling.

1b.  Fast tracked staff go through a set of virtual modules that mirror the full day orientation through our healthstream learning system.

2.  Once on the floor, they spend a day with a preceptor who goes through a 'bedside glucose testing initial training checklist,' which includes a verification that the trainer is a 'qualified observer,' a review of the procedure, quality control requirements (includes expiration dating of QC vials and strips, what to do if it fails, how often to perform, etc.) and patient testing (includes patient identification, acceptable sample locations - no earlobes!, what do do with questionable/failed tests, meter cleaning, documenting notification/treatment, etc).

We've been using this model for a little over a year now and the preceptors do a great job covering everything on the floor.
