Physician orders

We use EPIC, but it is a "task" style order by provider that is seen in  "other orders" tab.   Provider will order lab code POC 1028 which is "POC occult blood stool" this shows up on nurse task list and is seen in the other orders tab.  

Are you in a physician's office? When I worked for a physician group I got with all the providers in that office and we came up with standing orders based on age, visit reason, dx, and any covered tests (PSA, A1c, ect.) and we automatically drew or ran those tests at the visit. We added it to our policy manual under standing orders. Other ways was the doctors would put a note in the OV note at the bottom that said "at next visit run/draw *insert labs here*."

We have EPIC and built a "nursing" order that the physician uses, POC testing.  They then have a drop down menu to pick which point of care testing they want.
We too have unsolicited testing which generates a lab order and the charging for EPIC.  We audit a certain amount of tests to confirm there is a physician order that matches the unsolicited test. Very similar to what Patsy said.

We are in a hospital. We do have it set up as a task for physicians to order, but I wasn't sure how to ensure that nursing was only selecting what was ordered.  We are switching from a manual solicited result (where they select testing on the machine and manually result out) to an automated unsolicited.  I may need to look into setting up an audit.

This is my take but i am not the expert by any means.  Unsolicited orders are great until it comes to guaranteeing that a particular order belongs to a certain result unless you were the one that entered it.  They are just not connected so I feel like we have to assume by the date and time the order was placed anything following is the test performed for that order.  If it were easy, i would get rid of unsolicited orders but maybe there is a way to set these up and view them so it can be guaranteed.  I just don't get how and sometimes have to go to IT to find the orders
