Gastric pH - RightSpot pH indicator

Does anyone use the RightSpot pH indicator for gastric pH levels? Or any other waived test for gastric pH? One of our units is wanting to implement this system to check placement of gastric tubes on insertion. It is a waived test but we currently do not have any other test in place that checks gastric pH so I was trying to figure out how I would validate this system. Does anyone have any procedures they would be willing to share, or any other input that might be helpful?

Our hospital system determined that pH testing for gastric tube placement would fall under a nursing procedure and not under the laboratory's oversight. For CAP accredited labs - If the test is ordered, resulted and billed then the pH determination is a test. If there is a recorded note in the patient chart, absent an order and billing, then it can probably be identified as a procedure by the institution. If there is an order and a result on the patient chart then it becomes a test. When there is some variation in between, the institution needs to agree, via policy, what constitutes a test. A procedure becomes a test when it is ordered and resulted on a patient's medical record. You could reach out to CLIA to see what they respond with also, as lab's , institutions must follow state, local guidelines. It may be possible, your state may have stringent requirements. Yes, the lab guidance and the institution must agree and work together to create a policy for this scenario.
