Lot Numbers - Enter/Edit in Epic

Does anyone else record lot#s in Enter/Edit in Epic for manual POC tests? If so, I'm guessing you work with your Epic team to update the test component with new lots so that the field is not free text?

Any pros/cons?

Thank you,

We do.  We use the manual test entry on our glucometer and the lot number is one of the things they have to scan.  We added the lot number as a test to the panel in QML and in the panel for Sunquest and EPIC.  The lot number shows beneath the result in EPIC.

We allow the lot number and expiration date to be free text in Enter/Edit.  The units buy their own kits and it would be very difficult to keep up with that information.  We have been doing it this way for 6 years and for the most part, the staff are entering correct information.

We have lot and expiration dates entered in the Enter/Edit function of the Epic ambulatory module.  It's been a handy tool when there has been lot number recalls.  You can create a report to ull the patients affected by the recalled lot number.  This happened with the LeadCare II Magellan recall for POCT Lead.

We also require lot numbers for Epic Enter/Edit.  We made them required fields so they cannot approve the result until it's filled in.  That being said it's free text so they can enter garbage if they don't have the lot# or expiration date.
