Patient COVID Swab tranport

Is there any special education that is needed if you are transporting patient swabs from your clinic site to either another clinic or the laboratory for testing? Since these are Category B specimens I was unsure since all I find is about shipping but we are not going to be doing that we just need to get it to another location.

Thanks!

Hi
Our organization collects COVID swabs at our phlebotomy stations and sends them to the main hospital via courier service.
  • The specimens are placed in a screw-top conical tube, capped and placed in 2 part biohazard bag with requisition.
  • Hospital courier picks them up and deliveries them to the lab.
If you were shipping/mailing USPS or other carrier then you would need to package them as Category B specimens.

In our organization clinics are upstairs, the lab is one floor below.  We only test symptomatic patients in our clinics.   I sent out Abbott’s tech tips for COVID swab collection and transport instruction before we went live with testing.  To minimize contact with multiple staff, the majority of COVID swabs are collected by the MD/NP/DO.  They are transported to lab in a screw top conical tube in a specimen bag within one hour of collection for processing as indicated in the ID NOW PI.
