Brenda Carter, how do you identify and connect with staff who are resulting Fern Testing?  Do you track all providers, or just faculty (?) members?  who do you consider to be faculty members?

Melinda....in addition to my everyday POC duties, I oversee POC for a Residency Practice under the hospitals CLIA. I have a POC rotation with new incoming Residents and I have annual POC Noon Conference for all Residents and Faculty (these are the Providers/Physicians) They all perform Fern Testing not just in clinic but in the hospital as well. So, when inspectors come and they want to pull a tracer on a resident or physician performing PPMP, they come to me. Hope that helps. Thanks for those questions.

Brenda are you doing a direct observation with each provider? We have about 100 providers across our health system who are performing KOH, vaginal wet prep and Fern testing. Currently they all are doing an online test each year but we are trying to figure out how to get more compliant with our PPMP program.

Thank you for your question Tracie. No, I am not doing direct observation with each provider/resident. I use API Survey's. We (the techs) have 3 challenges throughout the year and I use this as my observation in addition to competency exams on Fern, Wet Prep, KOH and Pinworm Prep. I also include microscope competency and lecture for my incoming residents. I am pleased that I can get at least 80% participation. I get 100% participation from the ER physicians. I have partnered with one physician who makes sure everyone performs their competencies. They use POC FOB and Gastric kits. To this date, inspectors are very pleased with our PPMP program.
