Blood Gas Utilization

Aloha all,

Embarking on another PI project with blood gas utilization.

Does your facility use any algorithms, guidelines, or protocols?
What is your process for evaluating blood gas utilization?

Do you mean for the purpose of monitoring overuse/abuse?  Can't say I've ever seen such an initiative centered around blood gas.  Generally with a critical care monitor like that, it rarely gets questioned.

@James-looking at overutilization or underutilization.  For example, at our peds hospital, we have some provider variation in total blood gas volume, we also run way more blood gasses than our adult sister hospitals.    Some of the literature search recommend algorithms/guidelines for blood gas utilization, but I am not having any luck finding any.

Interesting.  I can ask our Children's hospital what they've seen.  My guess is that a lot of what may seem like excess blood gas testing is driven by children newly-diagnosed with Type I diabetes, which you would not generally see nearly as much of in an adult hospital.
