Patient recollection process EPIC, Telcor, Sunquest

Neonatal intensive care RN draws the infant blood and sends to lab.  If the speciment needs a recollect, the lab has a process to cancel the order, order a recollect and then someone re-orders the test (all done by different staff in lab).  The order then posts to a phlebotomist handheld for collection.  The problem is the NICU is unaware it needs recollection.  Lab is trying to call NICU with the notice but as this is not the normal process it is often missed leading to delay in patient care.  Any ideas for process improvement that would be automated?
