Hey all,
We are looking for a whole blood pregnancy test for the ER.
Does anyone have any recommendations?  I am not finding anything that is FDA approved.
Thanks

Are you only considering waived testing for the ER whole blood pregnancy test?

Abbott i-STAT has a whole blood beta hcG test, but it is mod complex. There was a company called Adexus that had a lateral flow whole blood test, not sure if it got FDA approved. It also was mod complex, and used a lot of blood if I remember correctly.

We just went live with the i-Stat beta hCG in our SDS area for patients who are unable to provide urine.  As Kathleen said, it is moderately complex.  It only takes 17 uL of heparinized blood (not capillary) and takes 10 minutes to run.

Also use the iSTAT here for beta hCG.  We draw it in a lithium heparin tube, and then if confirmation is needed (indeterminate result) we can send for a quant in lab off the same li hep tube :)

Hey,
Yes, waived would be a great option, if it exists.
We swapped to the Epoc a couple of years ago, so i-Stat would not be an option.
I will be investigating the Adexus.

Thanks for the quick responses!
Susan
