PPMP Competency - under Joint Commission

We have our PPMP program under Joint Commission and are currently struggling with how to do the 6 elements of competency assessment with each provider. We are using an online program to have them review slides and document their responses but we can not figure out how to get our arms around the rest of the competency requirements, i.e. direct observation. What is everyone else doing?

We have them perform a previous API/CAP Proficiency Image (that has already been submitted and graded)....we have justified that since this is sufficent for proficiency testing , it is sufficent for competency. Let me know if you have further questions! Happy to help!

For direct observation, the medical director associated with the clinic performing PPMP is the observer if at all possible. They have to handle other compliance-type stuff for the practice related to the MDs and protocols.
If the MD is in the residency program then a faculty who is attending when the resident comes through that rotate needs to take the time to observe.
It may be different for private practices that there doesn't have to be a 'lead' MD but if there is, although difficult to engage some of these MDs who are specialists, maybe you could find one who was willing to observe? It's in their best interest that everyone they are partnering with is 'good at their job'.

The person observing needs to qualify as a Technical consultant.  We have it delegated by the medical director to a nurse educator on the birthing center unit at our facility who meets these requirements.  She either observes the provider performing an actual PPM test when they have one, or they walk her through a simulated test.  We use older photomicrographs as unknowns.  Our PPM testing is KOH Wet Preps and Fern Testing.
