What does everyone use for Hemoglobin and Hematocrit testing?

We just use a simple HemoCue Hgb analyzer.  We are going to update to the 801's Just put the order in for them. Never had any issues with the 201+, they are just 13-15 years old.

It depends on which area needs the testing. We have Hemocue in clinics, one of our NICUs, and pre-op clinics where they're used to determine if people have a high enough hemoglobin for surgery. At other sites we use i-STAT hematocrit and calculated hemoglobin. One of our NICUs uses Epoc. We have GEM5000s at one hospital that do a hemoglobin and calculated hematocrit. Another hospital has RapidPoint 500e for NICU, OR, ED, ICU, etc. and have hemoglobin and calculated hematocrit. A real hodge-podge! We do compare all of these to the lab except for the offsite clinics, and get acceptable comparisons.

Like Kathleen, it depends on where and what complexity you can look at. We use the HemoCue for hemoglobins out in our waived testing arena. We are still on the old 201+ and our fleet is aged too. We have not moved forward with the 801s...but it is probably a matter of time.

In our OR, NICU and TCU areas, we use the ABL90s for gasses that includes a hemoglobin but the intent is for gases and all, not just for a hemoglobin. Our ground and air ambulances use the epoc...but that is not co-oximeter based.

We use the Hemocues for our OP areas (201+) and OR as a DM.  Our ICUs, ED and Transport have the H & H on the EG7 or Chem8 cartridge.

We have Hemocue 201DMs. CVOR uses an ABL90 during open hearts that has a true measured Hgb.

We only have the H/H turned on for use at our off-site surgery center and NICU so they can use it as a "screen" to get an idea if needed.

Waived testing:
Have 1 remaining 'ticking along' HemoCue 201+, 3 HemoCue 801s, 1 Hemopoint - in offsite clinics.
Have 12 Hemopoints in WIC Women-Infact-Children clinics that UTMB administers.
