Cell saver - autotransfusionist?

Bit of an odd question, I know - POCs get all the oddball questions!

Our new OR director asked if any lab staff are qualified to operate the Cell Saver devices.  It looks like you need to be specifically certified for this task?  Sites with Cell Savers, who operates your devices?  Are they contract workers or employed by the hospital?

Our perfusionist handle the cell savers. We do help them do correlations quarterly with the lab.

Our perfusionists handle this. Our perfusionists are employees, but that varies widely.

That's pretty much always a perfusionist's job to actually run the equipment intraoperatively.  Lab's only role typically is to test samples they collect in order to assess efficacy of the cellsaver devices.  Perhaps that's what your OR director meant?

Yep same perfusionist run the machines. They give use samples and we test them pre and post for Hct and Alb. Ours use I stat doing cases and I also make sure that the 6  month cal/ver and updates are done. They are on our network, but technically the heart group owns them.

Same as above. Our heart surgery perfusionists operate the cell savers and we do quarterly testing on the pre- and post-specimens they send us.
