Glucose Test on Spinal Fluid

Hi,

Have any of you had requests for using glucometer or urine test strips to test for glucose from fluid from spinal placement?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Stacie,
In both cases that would be off-label use, which would raise the complexity to High Complexity testing. In order to implement that, you would have to validate that test as a Lab Developed Test (LDT) which requires extensive validation steps including things like establishing your own reference range and testing for interfering substances. In addition, the only testing personnel that would qualify to perform high complexity testing would be MLS and above for licensure states, and verified Bachelor Degree in life science with transcript review for appropriate number of scientific credits earned for non-licensure states.
From my experience, once I explain that to a provider wanting to do off-label testing, they change their tune fairly quickly.
Hope that helps!

Thank you, Silka! This was the verbiage that I was looking for but couldn't think of how I should respond to the email from the Department.
