CAP Allowable Errors for EPOC

Happy Friday!  Rather than ordering PT for POC blood gas, we perform 6 month Cal/Ver and Method Comparisons.  Does anyone have the acceptable limits for epoc per CAP?  We are new epoc users and have a slightly different test menu from our old platform.

Thanks!

Hello. I use Data Innovations for all tEAs. Website here: https://datainnovations.com/allowable-total-error-table

Hi, can you elaborate more on what you mean saying "you perform cal/ver and method comparisons rather that Proficiency Testing?" Maybe I am confused, but I have always been under the understanding that you must be enrolled in PT in addition to 6-month cal/ver and method comparisons. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Or maybe I misunderstood what you were saying?

You can find the CLIA 2024 limits and more information with this website: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/07/11/2022-14513/clinical-laboratory-improvement-amendments-of-1988-clia-proficiency-testing-regulations-related-to This document also states in the first section "Participation in PT is required under the CLIA statute for laboratories that perform moderate or high complexity testing".

Another website I like to use for TEa is Westgard - it is a bit easier to read than the above website https://westgard.com/clia-a-quality/quality-requirements/1002-2024-clia-requirements.html

Megan - you aren't wrong - depending on the test menu and also depending on other platforms that may be doing Blood Gas testing under the same CAP number. You are correct in saying that CAP PT may be required and Cindy - definitely double check the CAP Master Activity menu. Locate your test menu items and if there is a Y in the column next to them, you have to use CAP PT products supplied by the CAP. The only exception to this is if your laboratory, under the same CAP number, already reports that same analyte under a different PT product. For example, if your chemistry department is reporting out Glucose on their C survey, you would not be required to use CAP PT for POCT glucose PT. You would still need to do an alternative PT for POCT glucose though.

Thank you, Tianna! We actually use API for our EPOC blood gas testing for the exact scenario Tianna mentioned above. I personally really like API!

To add to this conversation, we have the Hemochron Sig Elites doing ACT testing and also do ACT on iSTAT. We only report ACT on the iSTAT to CAP and we use the quality cross check for Sig Elites ACT as both the alternative PT and instrument comparisons.

Hi Megan,
Our main lab orders PT from CAP.  Since we do the same testing in POC, we do the Cal/Ver and Method Comp. instead.  This is acceptable per CAP as long as  all the required analytes are covered by PT in at least one area.  Thanks for the website info.

Thanks Tianna, that is what we (POC) does, (alternate testing).
Have a good weekend!

As far as the total allowable ranges.  I know that a lot of people use the datainnovations limits, but does it matter that most of their ranges for the analytes are marked for serum instead of whole blood?  And as far as each analyte if they have more than one option, do you just choose the one you like or do most people chose the Clia one?
