BinaxNow covid antigen testing - swab transport

Hello fellow listserv POC Pals who oversee compliance/manage POC Operators who perform BinaxNow covid antigen testing.

This question is just for curiosity. I'm not publishing, haven't done a study. We do use this product. We did train to not put the collected swab back into the original wrapper of the swab. 'Train' being the operative word.

Has anyone done parallel testing to see the effect of putting the swab back into the wrapper vs putting the swab in another vehicle to transport the collected swab to the testing station?

(If I gave anyone an idea for an abstract, hey it's my idea so let's do it together!)

Thanks!

We have not done any parallel testing but it just seems to me that putting a moist swab back in paper wouldn't be ideal. We have them put the swab in a sterile transport tube for no longer than 1 hour (usually only minutes).
I do have a question for other users: we are now ordering the BinaxNow kits with 2 test/box, since we are doing so few. These do not come with any QC. Does anyone else use these and run any outside QC?

Agree, Patricia. The 'challenge' for POC Operators to carry out the training for the Binax Now antigen covid test seems to be that for the ID NOW swab collections for flu/strep/RSV, it was 'ok' for the swab, just as moist, to go back into the paper sleeve/wrapper. POC Operators/collectors have been doing that since 2019.

Hello all, the IFU we had specifically stated in two places to not return the sampled swab to the paper packaging.    1. Precautions section line 22 and 2. Specimen Transport and Storage.

We do not use the BinaxNow Covid antigen test now, did Abbott successfully get the test an FDA waived approval after the EUA declaration expired?

Hi Charles! Agree, it's clear in the IFU/package insert what to do/how to handle swab after collection. Not questioning.
Sorry I was not clear I guess in my question for curisity only, f anyone had seen firsthand the potential 'difference' in outcomes of the results if users did forget or 'cheat' and use the wrappers.
Thanks for your comment!
Sorry, I personally/professionally can't reply on the 'successful' achievement (or not) as an FDA waived (I have not continued to check FDA waived testing lists); the most current info I've seen continues with EUA language but I have not seen the package insert lately.
