i-STAT and Wi-Fi

Hi all,

Got a request from a home health care group that wants to use i-STAT devices on a mobile basis, connected to a smartphone wi-fi hotspot.

Aside from my obvious concerns about security, is this even possible?

We have only ever used the downloader bases here, connected to physical network jacks.  While I see the i-STAT manual describes a wi-fi setup, this seems like it must be done on a PC through an ad hoc network.  Also, it appears that such a network remains in an "open" state with no security protection.

Has anyone successfully implemented the device in this fashion?  If so, any insights are greatly appreciated.

Is there a specific reason why the results must upload immediately right then and there? Sounds like it would be easier all around to just dock the instrument when the rounds are completed at the end of the shift/day at a centralized 'home base' that has any security measures needed already in place. I'm assuming too of course that you're using it with waived cartridges.

Strongly suggest speaking with your IS department first to determine security requirements as they differ from one entity to another. That may stop the inquiry right there. In my previous life, results were downloaded once the analyzers came "home". I'll be interested to see how others manage this!

Our iSTATs were wireless but a few months ago IT cracked down and now they must be placed on downloaders to transmit results.

Thanks everyone for your input.  First off - I myself am not a fan of this program concept as pitched.  Second - if implemented, my recommendation would be to use a laptop with VPN to access secure network, and carry a downloader connected via USB.  That is, if they are desperate to download right then and there.  Otherwise, a home base would be a much better idea.

One of our mobile locations attempted to use a Meraki device.  I honestly don't know if they got it to work or not (we are not their oversight any longer).  They do have a downloader at their home base location that works when they come back from patient visits.
