BD Urine Collection Straws and fingersticks

My clinics are using the BD urine collection straw when they need to send in urine culture samples to the lab. They usually got them individually wrapper but are now receiving them in a bulk bag of 100. We just had a staff member that was stuck and now there are calls for alternative devices. Anyone have this happen?
I believe they did not get stuck when pulling one out but after the urine was drawn off into the culture tube so that seems to me to be a issue with how the  staff was using it and not due to the device.  Maybe just some training to reiterate that there is a needle inside and to make sure that you are not placing your finger anywhere near the inside.  Anything else I missing?

I think you are correct in your thought process. I think it is more of a training opportunity then a device issue.

We thought it would be great to have our ED area use those straws to collect into a tube from the cup.  Yeah, that went about as well as what you described above. They dumped them in a bin and just reached in their hands without really looking. Shockingly someone stuck their finger on the needle inside the collection area even though it is not that easy to do.   Funny thing though, the lab never had one finger stick with these urine collection straws, and we used them all the time to collect cultures and chemistry tests.  Weird, huh.
We had to switch to cups with a needle build in for the ED that they could depress the tube on to it because they couldn't pay attention enough to watch where they were putting their hands.

Yes we have those blue topped cups but then the tops need to go into a sharps container and that is much bigger item and right now our sharps have a small opening and they will not fit.  I also was told lab has not had any issues with these so they are not understanding at all what is happening "out in the wild" :)
