Expired Epoc Cards

Is there a way we can use the expired Epoc cards for training purposes only? I have three unused boxes and I hate to throw them away (because of $$$). I would love to use them for teaching/training purposes, but we use RALS and it will not let us use them even with putting an extended exp date on them. Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to change any settings in RALs because I do not want my groups to be able to use expired cards, but when I am doing a training, I don't mind using an expired one. Thanks!

Hi Megan! The only way we've found is to log into the host as an Administrator, turn off the data manager, and then manually set the date on the host to sometime prior to the card expiration date. Just a heads up, though...when you turn the DM back on and synchronize the host, results will pull into RALS with a result date of whatever (wrong) date you entered. So if you want to be able to retrieve the results as a record of training, you have to search for them by the download date rather than the result date.

Edited to add - actually, now that I think of it, there is also a setting on the host that says "allow expired test cards." You have to be logged in as an Administrator to see it. Then go to Settings --> General Settings --> Allow expired test cards. You don't have to turn off the DM to do it this way.

Thank you so much Christina! I will have to give this a try before a training next time!

This is what I did with expired i-STAT during EPIC CONVERSION when we did a lot of testing and result validation.

I used the EXPIRED cartridges but I scanned the GOOD cartridge barcode during instrument setup and inserted the expired cartridge with samples. Results transmitted because the instrument is not requiring barcode at testing, it requires the barcode at the beginning to validate the card you card is valid.

I do not know if it will work for your need for staff education.

Sincerely,
Alma

@Alma - unfortunately, this wouldn't work with the Epoc because the card lot/expiration is on a barcode which is read internally when the card is inserted into the reader.

I would look at the settings in the host- if you log in as administrator I think you can configure the device separate from RALS and have it use expired cards. We use Telcor so I am not sure about RALS but the Host settings might be the way to go.

There is the opportunity to allow the epoc to use expired cards. I have used this to work on sample injection if a user has a higher incidence or just wants practice. The change can be made in EDM, or on the device if you do not use EDM. I am certain that your epoc support specialist can assist with finding and changing those options. I should bring up that the expired card use will allow for sample injection but will not give any test results, only sample flags. Due to this, expired card use is not optimal for a competency performance exercise.

hope that helps.
