GEM100

This is an informative post:
We recently updated our RALS to 8.5.3, which now has barcode definitions for the GEM100 Hemochron.  Previously, we had to configure the barcodes through the GEM Hemochron Configuration Manager.  When RALS sends an update to the instruments, it replaces the barcode configuration with its own (which was not configured).  I am currently working with RALS to configure barcodes in RALS.  For my institution, we have not yet been able to successfully have the GEMs read the patient's wristband when programmed through RALS.  The instrument does read our operator IDs.  We have 2 leading alpha digits before the operator ID and Patient ID which are different.  RALS is not sending both sets of alpha digits to the instruments.
Just in case anyone else is also experiencing barcode woes.

Hi Autilia,

We just linked GemWeb directly to EPIC instead of going through middleware. We have UniPOC. It worls great adn I like controlling users through GemWeb and CCM for the meter settings. I have 8 units using the meters with their unique settings. I just have a config file for each I update as needed through CCM. Differences are how often to run QC, if any need emergency cases, etc. I also had one unit I had to manually enter their cuvette lots so they would know to QC first and not use for patients. You can also control barcodes in CCM and if you need or want leading alpha digits.

Hi Jason- isn't GemWeb middleware?  If sounds like GemWeb gives some additional functionality, but I am not in the position to add another middleware to my exidting middlewares!  We were successfully controlling the barcodes through CCM, but our POC software now is overwriting the definitions.  I hope to get some resolution today or tomorrow.... the weekend is here!!
Thanks for your input!

In that regard yes, it is. I was referring to UniPOC as middleware. We had issues with the old Elites and using UniPOC to manage since there was limited functionality with UniPOC. Also, UniPOC has never validated Elites past version 1.2 and never validated the Gem100 so they couldn't provide support for IT issues or any configurations not working. Not sure how much RALS charges for adding a platform or test but UniPOC is pretty expensive. We were under the impression from Werfen that you had to have Gemweb regardless so we just went straight to EPIC with using UniPOC.

lol- I believe there is a hefty fee associated with all of the vendors!!  We use RALS to manage all of our POC devices, including 300 Glucose, 20 Istat, 18 GEM100, outpatient POC, and operator certifications for upwards of 4,000. RALS does a good job of keeping up with new platforms and troubleshooting most issues. It provides us with a central software where POC device results needing attention can be stored and corrected.
Cheers

Sorry I am late to replying and you might have figured this out by now.  We have the new GEMS and they would not read badge numbers.  We had to first connect to the Configuration Manager and uncheck the check digit sum for each GEM.  Even though we are not using Configuration Manager we had to do this first to allow that barcode language. HOpe this helps,
Patty

Hi Patricia- we had been successfully using the barcode assignments from the config manager, but after our RALS update, the barcode definitions were being erased and replaced with the RALS definitions, which were not programmed.   Rals has been able to correct my issue, but it did take several days back and forth with Tech Support.
