Operator Recertification for Cobas Liat

Hi all,

In past years, we've manually recertified Liat operators using our DMS, RALS as well as have each operator perform a fake patient test using a "demo" tube.

In order to be in compliance with CDPH regulations, we want to make sure we're having operators meet the five elements of competency for waived tests. With our current workflow, we can't verify that a patient test and a QC test was performed for each operator for competency documentation. One of the obstacles we're facing is that the Liat doesn't allow for repeat QC testing after a successful normal and abnormal QC have been performed for a new lot.

If anyone has run into the same issue and has any workarounds, please let me know!

Thank you!

Are there 5 elements required for WAIVED competency assessment by CDPH or is that what your organization required? Are you Joint commission or CAP or CLIA/CDPH?

Can you share what are those and which standards are you referring to?

Sincerely,
Alma

Heather, I don't know the LIAT, and we only have to require performing a QC or a patient test (or fake patient test, known value) for WT competency.
This may not work with LIAT. I'm suggesting consider using a QC swab (to fulfill the QC requirement) but use the patient test mode, not the QC mode, to perform the test. The 'patient/sample ID' field could identify it's a QC swab ('Comp Assess QC pos') unless there is a lockout.
My preference for training a new hire on our POC Molecular instrument is to hand the new hire a QC swab as a 'fake patient swab', and they run it using patient test mode. Then, if the result fails to pass, since new hire did not use the QC mode which locks out for failed QC, the instrument is immediately useable by another operator.

Thank you, Peggy! That is a really good idea.
