Cotinine/Nicotine testing

Does anyone else have surgeons ordering Cotinine and Nicotine testing on preop patients or just ordering Cotinine only? We were looking to bring in an oral cotinine test and have heard a little feedback that some surgeons want both.

Have you found a waived (depending on CLIA in place where it would be performed) nicotine test?
We did not at the time our Plastics docs needed a test; we offered cotinine, surgeons accepted readily and have never come back asking about a nicotine test at the point of care.
I appreciate your feedback that you are only testing Cotinine at your location. It always helps to know what our peers are doing!
I dug out our initial review and consideration of using this product (2009!) and it was all about 'metabolites' but in looking at the product as it appears in a distribution 'ad' today, definitely 'to detect nicotine' is included in the product description.
I wasn't able to get the online latest IFU and I don't have the time I'd need to drive to one of the very few physical locations that we stock the kit; however, I found an online Clinical Chemistry abstract citation from Vanderbilt University. Published 2025; that team evaluated the performance of NicCheck I tst strips 'to detect nicotine and it's metabolites in urine samples'.
I've attached.
I believe this will be of interest to you if you haven't seen it yet.
Good Luck!
