Glucose Testing on Pancreatic fluid

Good morning,

I am reaching out regarding a request from one of our clinical services to perform glucose testing on pancreatic cyst fluid to assist in differentiating mucinous from non-mucinous cysts. Our chemistry and reference laboratories currently do not offer this testing, and POC glucose testing for this specimen type is not approved at our site.

I wanted to inquire whether any facilities are currently performing glucose testing on pancreatic cyst fluid? If so, on what platform are you performing testing?

Our chief of surgery specifically mentions finding research articles in which they used POC glucose devices to perform the testing on the pancreatic fluid.

Thank you in advance for any shared experience,  or direction.

Respectfully,

To my knowledge there is no laboratory instrument that you can run pancreatic cyst fluid on without doing your own validations. Cyst fluid is not a routine body fluid. Routine body fluids are urine, CSF, Peritoneal, Pleural and Synovial. Your chief of surgery will have to understand that performing glucose on pancreatic cyst fluid is considered a Laboratory Developed Test and is high complexity. At best the glucose result will be for corollary use only. Talk to your Pathologist for more guidance.
