Recently our coders have gotten denials on hgba1c testing using 83036. Has the code changed to 83037? We use the Afinion 2 POC instrument.

Thanks,

There haven’t been any recent changes to the CPT code for point-of-care A1c testing. It’s still 83037, which applies to devices that are FDA-cleared for use in home or office settings. If the test is done in a lab, then CPT code 83036 would be appropriate. For POC testing, you might also need to include the QW modifier to show that it’s performed under a CLIA certificate.  Hope this helps.

The codemap for Afinion shows it as 86036QW, which is what we have. I do not show the 83037 at all.

This website gives a concise description of CPT coding for A1c testing.

We use 83037-QW performing testing in doctor's office on a DCA Vantage.
