Semi-Annual PPMP Assessment

Hi all,

What form of assessment are you using to meet the CLIA requirement of semi-annual performance for PPMP (a non-waived testing procedure)?
I am using MTS (UW), but is performing semi-annual competence more in alignment with the requirement?

I know some sites are using CAP PT to fulfill this requirement.

This is what is documented with the CDC Handout -
Participation in Proficiency Testing
Moderate complexity tests are subject to participation in proficiency testing (PT). While PT is not specifically required for PPM procedures, each laboratory or
testing site must meet the general CLIA requirements for alternative performance assessment by verifying the accuracy of their testing procedures at least twice
per year. Several CLIA-approved PT programs offer voluntary modules for PPM and participation in a clinical microscopy or PPM PT module will satisfy the
bi-annual alternative performance assessment requirement. If laboratories or testing sites enroll in PT, they are subject to all of the requirements for PT including the prohibition of PT referral.

Thanks.

Since it is so difficult to perform direct observed competency assessments on patient testing, we use proficiency testing too.We purchase proficiency testing from API for the microscopy.

We do Alternative Performance Assessments and use previously graded PT Samples as "Unknowns".  It basically seems like we are doing competency twice a year though as we don't have a large amount of providers performing PPM.

Thank you everyone.  The common thread in the responses indicate that there should be an assessment for each provider performing PPMP to be done twice a year.  I think that there is a misconception that this is like competency where it is mandated once a year per each provider, but if my understanding is correct, because it is considered moderate complexity, the assessment of testing needs to be performed twice a year per provider performing microscopic testing.  It is like how we validate our moderate complex instruments semi-annually in the Lab.  Agreed?
