Float Staff - Waived Competency

Hello,

Wondering what everyone does as far as Competency Assessment for Waived Testing when the operator floats between multiple CLIA sites? We do a general training for all POC operators for each test method and then they are given access to devices/testing at their respective primary site. We do have many who float to other locations as well due to staffing, vacations, etc. Each operator is assigned an electronic module/quiz and then are required to complete either QC or patient testing. Our system follows the same procedures as well as uses the same products at every location. Do these float staff need to have competency at each site they work?? We follow JC.

Thank you,
Karissa

Hey Karissa, we had the same issue when I was at New York Presbyterian. NYP has multiple sites, but each site has different CLIA licenses. We were under CAP but I believe it applies to all hospital accreditation. You can not transfer or share initial training and competencies. Each site had to have their own.

We are inspected by CAP and in California State. We require competency assessment base on CLIA license. We require staff who floats between campuses, maintain different sets of POC competency in each campus.

We are inspected by COLA and each location that has a different CLIA must have their own competency. We require them to do QC, a module and quiz, patient testing and an unknown or proficiency testing.
