switching POC glucose from Roche Inform II to Nova Stat Strip

I am changing from the Inform II to the Nova Stat Strip glucometer. I was wondering if facilities are using the Nova Manual Test Entry for urine HCG's? I have never used that before on a glucose meter. Are you able to capture the kit lot#, expiration, and internal QC passed in addition to the result? Is this worth the build, I use RALs for my middleware. Any advice on things to make sure that get done or checked. I just found out from Nova that they didn't have us set up to have a Test environment, that would send test patients to our Test RALs and Test EPIC after the go live date. I am lucky that just happen to come up in conversation before our go live date. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advanced.

Hi yes we use it for hcg and other manual entry test that we do. It can capture result, internal QC, kit lot and we have it capture external QC as well but that’s a different button “manual QC” vs “manual result” on our nova stat. You talked about expiration but we put our kit lots in RALS and RALS has the expiration date once they enter a validated lot by us. Glad you got them to mention test environment! Good luck!

Good morning,
We have been using the Nova Stat Strip for years and I have never known we can perform the Hcg tests on these meters. I would love more insight on this. Any particular test kit, Qc, etc that need to be used on the meter? We currently use Icon 20 Hcg and they manually result in Epic. The Qc is either put into Webmre or handwritten on logs depending on their facility. But if this would make some processes flow better, we might want to look into this. We do use a clinitek analyzer for our urinalysis, which they offer Hcg, but cost wise it is not worth the change. We also use other test kits like Osom mono, Hemocontrol and Lead care II analyzers in some of our clinics and everything is logged on paper. So, if any of this can be recorded in our middleware this would be wonderful news. Thank you in advance!

Currently we use Hcg combo urine serum rapid test from cardinal. Our operators only run urine on it though. But I’d follow up with Nova Stat to see if other products can be used. Yes this helps us a ton with our workflow process since we have a lot of sites and not all do the same poc test. We even block them from being able to manually input into Epic because our interface has so many safe guards to help us before it’s released to the patient chart.

Nicole,
How do you block them from manually inputting into EPIC?  We occasionally have a few that use Enter/Edit and that causes problems because it isn't CLIA stamped, nor is it billed correctly.  Curious how to stop this!  Thanks in advance!

Hey Julie our IT LIS team helped us with that. I’m not quite sure what they did on their end— sorry!

Nicole,
Is there a QC lock out feature and per location if so?

No QC lockout for the manual test on the instrument. A part of our job is still reviewing the data the end users are inputting to make sure it matches our procedure but we can just do it in RALS instead of collecting paper logs from multiple sites.

We have used NOVA for years and also use MTE for several tests--occult blood, upreg, strep, flu, covid, mono and hpylori. Looking to add fern testing soon and stop using enter/edit into Epic. Makes it easy to see who your certified operators are, can keep up with competency, monitor volumes, and can program different departments to have different MTE tests allowed on the meter. ED has several tests, pre-op only has pregnancy etc. RALS will build your MTE for each test you want, it is a great feature. Only con is when you have an operator that has multiple tests on their MTE profile, once they complete competency for one of the tests, the manual key will grant access, and they could continue to do other manual tests before they complete competency.  Brand of kit test does not matter for MTE.

Hello, for those who mentioned not knowing it was a feature, the Inform II also has this functionality.  I never thought of Fern test....
