Antigen Flu testing and non-respiratory season

Does anyone have a protocol for Influenza AB testing outside of typical respiratory season (October- April)?  Do you have any limits on ordering when the prevalence is low in the community?

Thanks,

My organization used the Quidel QuickVue Influenza A/B rapid antigen test in 2018 - 2020 and we had this statement in the policy: "The kit will be in use ONLY in the Primary Care Clinics and Immediate Care Clinics when flu season begins in Omaha, NE as determined by the Medical Director of Microbiology and the Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Testing with this kit must be discontinued once the Influenza season has ended in Omaha, NE as determined by the aforementioned individuals."

As the POC Coordinator - I was in charge of getting the go ahead from the above mentioned individuals and notifying the clinics when they could start testing and when they had to stop doing the test at point of care.

Additionally, I was the one that told our EMR team (Epic) to activate the POC order and we inactivated the POC order in the off season to help with compliance of the test only being used during the "season" we wanted it to be used in.
